A recently published statistic from Netcraft confirms Apache’s absolute top position among web servers worldwide. With almost 58% in January 2012, it is more than 4 times as widespread as the number two on the list.
Nginx, another open-source web server (BSD license), has just overtaken Microsoft IIS, according to this current study, and is in second place with a 12.18% market share (MS IIS 12.14%).
It should be noted, however, that the number of web servers using Apache increased abruptly in May-June 2011 (almost a doubling). This “jump” probably cannot be explained (solely) by a spontaneous increase in Apache web servers. Presumably, a changed measurement method is the reason…? In any case, the lead would still be twice as high if the increase had been “linear.” Still remarkable!
