Install WordPress Quickly and Easily with WP-CLI

1 minute read

This post is from May 2017. The screenshots show the interface as it was then; today it looks slightly different in places.

This short video tutorial shows how to install a new WordPress website in just a few steps. The prerequisites for successful execution are: SSH access, WP-CLI, and a previously set up database. The domain should also have already been created on the web server.

As of 2026: The steps from the video still work, but wp core config is now called wp config create (the old name still works but is deprecated). The three commands are: wp core download --locale=de_DE, then wp config create --dbname=… --dbuser=… --dbpass=… --dbhost=localhost, and finally wp core install --url=… --title=… --admin_user=… --admin_email=…. If you omit --admin_password, WP-CLI will generate a secure password itself and display it once. In the video, WordPress 4.7 is loaded, but wp core download always fetches the current version. Instructions on how to install WP-CLI itself can be found in the official handbook.
