For several years, SaaS Web has offered Managed ownCloud Hosting—SaaS Web was one of the first official partners of the community version. Frank Karlitschek, founder and until recently CTO of ownCloud Inc., left the company in April 2016 and shortly thereafter founded a new one: Nextcloud GmbH. Nextcloud is initially a fork of ownCloud but pursues a different goal: the entire application is intended to be free of charge, with support reserved exclusively for paying premium customers. By comparison, ownCloud includes features such as the File Firewall or the logging module only in the premium distribution—support is likewise intended only for paying customers.
SaaS Web views Mr. Karlitschek as the driving force behind the development of ownCloud. His departure from ownCloud and the founding of Nextcloud (as a drop-in replacement for ownCloud) have profound consequences; SaaS Web holds the opinion that the software only has a future under Nextcloud.
Therefore, SaaS Web will gradually migrate existing ownCloud customers to Nextcloud in the coming weeks, while discontinuing the ownCloud offering immediately and replacing it with an equivalent Managed Nextcloud Hosting service.
